Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Cornus kousa White Giant

    Dogwood. A broadly conical tree with dark green leaves. which turn dark red-purple in autumn. White flowers are surrounded by bracts, followed by red fruit. Height 2.5m. Spread 2m.

  • Cornus kousa Witelings Select

    This form is particularly hardy, with excellent autumn colour. Masses of creamy white bracts as is to be expected from a named cultivar.

  • Cornus kousa Wolf's Eye

    A slightly more vigorous, upright habit, lush green leaves which take on deep red and crimson tints in a good autumn. An attractive, ornamental shrub suitable for most gardens. Stunning whit bracts in early spring.

  • Cornus mas

    Cornelian Cherry. Dogwood. A spreading shrub or small tree with dark green leaves, which turn red-purple in autumn. Yellow flowers are produced in small umbels before the leaves appear and are followed by fleshy bright red fruit. Height 5m. Spread 2m. Flowers from February to March. Fruits from August.

  • Cornus nuttallii Eddie's White Wonder

    Pacific Dogwood. A conical tree with mid-green leaves, which turn red in autumn. Purple and green flowers are surrounded by white or pink tinged bracts, followed orange-red fruit. Height 12m. Spread 8m. Flowers from March to April. Fruits from June Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Cornus ousa Nicole

    A vase-shaped small tree or shrub puts on a spectacular display of large, white, four-petalled flowers in early summer. In autumn, its leaves turn from mid-green through red and purple shades and these, together with the large, round, red fruits which dangle in clusters from its stems. 3m x 3m.

  • Corylus avallana Red Majestic

    It has beautiful, deep purple leaves in spring and summer. The branches have the same intricately contorted appearance and it has pretty pink/purple catkins in later winter or early spring. It makes a spectacular specimen shrub and is suitable for most garden sizes.
