Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Leonotis leonurus

    Lions Tail. Member of mint family, tender, evergreen shrub with spectacular orange flowers in tiered layers. Great patio plant and in the greenhouse for winter.

  • Leptospermum scoparium Pink

    New Zealand Tea tree a weeping prostrate form. pale pink flowers. Flowers from May to June. Height 1m. Evergreen. Hardy. Plant in a sheltered sunny spot.

  • Leptospermum scoparium Red Damask

  • Leptospermum scoparium Snow Flurry

    A showy flowering shrub with evergreen foliage, repeat blooming and a bounty of nectar for bees. A borderline hardy shrub – best grown in mild areas of the UK. Grow in a south or west-facing, warm sheltered site in full sun or partial shade, in well drained soil.

  • Leptospermum scoparium Wiri Adrianne

    Compact evergreen shrub, arching stems with cup shaped soft pink double coloured flowers. Height to 2.5 m. Flowers Spring time. Frost Hardy.

  • Leucothoe Color Diamond

    An attractive evergreen shrub with stunning, glossy foliage in shades of green, white, red and pink. This Leucothoe has a neat, bushy, compact growth habit making it ideal for the front of borders, containers or as a compact hedge.

  • Leucothoe Curly Red

    Easy to grow and excellent ground cover, these will provide colour from Autumn, well into spring. Leathery curly green to deep purple red foliage in the summer followed by stunning claret purple/red tints in the winter. Dense, compact, bushy habit preferring a moist soil in partial shade. This is an ideal plant for container planting in winter.

  • Leucothoe walteri Makijaz

    A striking compact, evergreen with colourful foliage that changes colour every season from deep red and burgundy to white and green. Height 60cm. Suitable for pot culture. Moist well drained peaty soil. Part shade/sun.

    Small to medium sized shrub of elegant habit, excellent ground cover for acidic soils, graceful arching stems carry leathery green variegated cream yellow pink leaves, white flowers in June.

  • Leycesteria formosa Golden Lantern

    An easy growing plant with attractive, clean, bright yellow-green foliage with hints of red in the new growth. In mid-summer it is covered with long pendulous drooping clusters of dark purplish-red bracts and white flowers. Follow this with dark purple berries in autumn. Fantastic plant.

  • Leycesteria formosa Purple Rain

    Himalayan Honeysuckle. An upright shrub with blue-green young stems and pendent white flowers surrounded by purple-red bracts. followed by purple-red berries. Height 2m. Spread 2m. Flowers from July to September. Fruits from August Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Ligustrum Aureum

    A neat, bright evergreen plant for planting in sun or shade. Clip twice a year to maintain the shape.

  • Lophomyrtus x ralphii Red Dragon

    A striking evergreen shrub from New Zealand. The dark purple/red foliage is carried on an upright framework. The myrtle-like white flowers appear in the summer. They are followed by red berries that darken as they mature. A really interesting and uncommon plant. Frost hardy but likes a sheltered site.

  • Loropetalum chinense Black Pearl

    An eye-catching compact evergreen shrub with rich dark green foliage tinted purple all year round. Deep rose, fringed, spider like flowers are produced in abundance in early spring. Height 1m.

  • Magnolia acuminata Blue Opal

    An evergreen tree with glossy dark green leaves. Blue buds turning yellow produced from late summer to early autumn. Height 6-8m. Spread 5m. Flowers from August to September. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Magnolia Daphne

    Deep yellow magnolia with long tipped golden yellow petals open into broad cup shaped flowers. A hybrid between Magnolia 'Honeybee' and 'Gold Crown'.
