Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Forsythia x intermedia Minigold

    Compact upright habit, flowers deep yellow in early spring in dense sprays along the naked stems. Excellent small variety of this popular shrub.

  • Forsythia x intermedia Weekend

    A superb Spring flowering shrub. The branches are an absolute mass of yellow flowers in Mar - Apr. Grows up to 2.5m.

  • Fothergilla major

    An upright shrub with glossy dark green leaves, turning brilliant red, orange and yellow in autumn. Fragrant white, bottlebrush flowers borne before the leaves. Height 2.5m. Spread 2m. Flowers from March to June. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Fuchsia Alice Hoffman

    Upright deciduous shrub with small semi-double flowers adorned with rose-red sepals and tube and a white corolla with rose veining. Emerging in spring, small, ovate, bronze tinted, dark green leaves line the gracefully arching branches.

  • Garrya elliptica James Roof

    Silk-tassel Bush. An upright shrub with glossy, evergreen green leaves. Attractive grey-green catkins in mid-winter. Height 4m. Spread 4m. Flowers from February to April. Evergreen. Frost hardy. Sheltered Site.

  • Garrya x thurettii

    Evergreen shrub with dark green, glossy leaves that are slightly narrower than those of the more common Garrya elliptica. A tough, undemanding shrub, it will cope with shady sites and salt-laden coastal winds. Silky tassels are produced in mid to late winter.

  • Griselinia littoralis

    A delightful and extremely useful evergreen with subtle foliage variegated green through lime green to yellow. Hardier than most of the variegated forms, but much more interesting than the plain green, this tough shrub to 2m will tolerate exposure to salt winds.

  • Griselinia littoralis Green Horizon

    Similar to the standard Griselinia, but with deeper green and oval glossy foliage, Griselinia Green Horizon is a fast growing evergreen, hardy to at least -10°C to -12°C.

  • Halesia carolina

    Silver Bell. Snowdrop Tree. A spreading tree with mid-green leaves turning yellow in autumn.
