Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Pittosporum tenuifolium Coxhill Gold

    Roundish-oval green leaves with yellow edges and a slight crinkle. White flowers. Oval, bushy growth habit. Sun to part-shade. Fertile, moist during growing season, well-drained soil.

  • Pittosporum tenuifolium Dunloe Castle

    Glossy, evergreen leaves and striking dark stems. Leaves may be various shades of green, yellow, purple or silvery-grey, or variegated, depending on the cultivar. The flowers are usually small, brown and lightly scented, although some have showy white flowers with a strong fragrance.

  • Pittosporum tenuifolium Elizabeth

    A large bushy shrub with variegated cream & green leaves with a distinctive pink edge, especially in winter. Bell-shaped, black-red flowers. Height 1.2m. Spread 60cm. Flowers from May to June. Evergreen. Frost hardy.

  • Pittosporum tenuifolium Emerald Dome

    A compact bushy shrub with green leaves with a platinum overlay. Compact habit. Evergreen. Frost hardy. 1m high. 0.75m spread. Sun or light shade.

  • Pittosporum tenuifolium Golf Ball

    A compact, evergreen shrub with golden leaves edged in green. Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Protect in colder parts from cold, drying winds. Can be planted in sun or partial shade, although leaf colour is best in sun.

    A large bushy shrub with white leaves, mottled green. Bell-shaped, black-red flowers. Height 1.2m. Spread 60cm. Flowers from May to June. Evergreen. Frost hardy.

    Japanese Mock Orange. A large bushy shrub with lustrous deep green leaves, margined white. Clusters of sweetly scented, creamy white flowers. Height 2-m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from May to June. Evergreen. Sheltered site required.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Double Punch Cream

    A wonderfully free flowering low maintenance deciduous shrub. The Double Punch series of potentillas have magnificent semi-double or fully double flowers that repeat throughout the Summer, this variety producing dark pink buds opening to creamy white blooms set upon light apple green leaves.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Double Punch Peach

    Small shrub that is covered with double peach-coloured flowers, which look like mini roses as they open up. Excellent in containers or in the border. May-October flowering. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in most garden soils. 50cm x 50cm (20" x 20").

  • Potentilla fruticosa Elizabeth

    Cinquefoil. A bushy shrub with dark green leaves. Pretty, cup-shaped, bright yellow flowers from late spring to mid-autumn. Height 1m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from May to July. Deciduous.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Goldfinger

    Cinquefoil. A bushy shrub with dark green leaves. Pretty, cup-shaped, large rich yellow flowers from late spring to mid-autumn. Height 1m. Spread 1m. Flowers from May to July. Deciduous. Sunny position.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Goldstar

    Cinquefoil. An upright shrub with dark green leaves. Pretty cup-shaped, large deep yellow flowers from late spring to mid-autumn. Height 90cm. Spread 1.2m. Flowers from May to July. Deciduous. Hardy. Planting instructions Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Katherine Dykes

    Cinquefoil. A bushy shrub with dark green leaves. Pretty, cup-shaped, canary-yellow flowers from late spring to mid-autumn. Height 1m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from May to July. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Lovely Pink

    A vigorous rounded shrub growing to a height and diameter of 0.8 to 1m. It only needs a light pruning at the end of winter. The foliage is dark green. Its main attributes are not only its abundant flowers from the end of spring to the first frosts but also its beautiful long lasting soft pink monochrome, the colour might fade in bright sunlight, but swiftly regains its colour. The plant is hardy in all regions.

  • Prunus laurocerasus Gajo

    Laurel. A dense, slow growing, hybrid, bushy evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves. Fragrant white flowers on upright spikes in spring, followed by violet fruit. Clip annually to keep in shape. A slow growing hybrid.

  • Prunus laurocerasus Otto Luyken

    Cherry Laurel. A compact, bushy, evergreen shrub with glossy narrow green leaves. Clip annually to keep this half std to shape. Fragrant white flowers on upright spikes in spring, followed by red fruit ripening to black. Height 1m. Good in shade or sun. Harmful if eaten.

  • Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia

    Portuguese Laurel. A dense bushy shrub with glossy dark green leaves. Fragrant white flowers on pendent racemes in early summer, followed by red fruit ripening to black. Height 3m. Spread 2m. Flowers from June to July. Fruits from July. Evergreen.

  • Prunus nipponica Ruby

    A dwarf stock small tree with small ruby flowers in early spring.

  • Prunus padus

    Bird Cherry. A spreading tree with dark green leaves that turn red or yellow in autumn. Pretty cup-shaped white flowers in late spring followed by glossy blue-black fruit. Height 15m. Spread 10m. Flowers from April to May. Fruits from June Deciduous. Hardy. Planting instructions Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

  • Prunus pissardii Nigra

    Dark purple foliage and pretty pale, delicate pink flowers adorn this bush in May. Wonderful for foliage contrast, can be clipped to shape.

  • Prunus serrulata Kiku-shidare-zakura

    Cheals Weeping Cherry. A weeping tree with bronze leaves when young. Pretty clusters of fully double bright pink flowers before the leaves, from mid to late spring. Height 4m. Spread 3m.

  • Prunus serrulata Royal Burgundy

    Ornamental Cherry. An upright tree with purple leaves. Pretty, double deep pink flowers from mid to late spring. Flowers from April to May. Deciduous.
