Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Lavatera x hybrida Blushing Bride

    Lavatera ‘Blushing Bride’ (Tree mallow). The genus contains about 5 species of annuals, biennials, perennials and softwooded shrubs. They have an upright habit with simple to palmately lobed leaves. They are fully hardy to frost hardy and will grow in full sun with well drained soil.

  • Leucothoe Burning Love

    Evergreen, small, clump-forming shrub with undivided, ovate to ovate-elliptical, slender pointed leaves, 5-10 cm long which are deep red or purplish in the autumn, winter and spring, green in the summer. Cylindrical, white flowers in nodding clusters appear in the summer.

  • Leucothoe Carnaval

    A small dense ground covering shrub. Arching habit. Glossy evergreen ovate foliage colouring red purple in winter, green/yellow/white in summer. White flowers in May. A spectacular foliage plant. Height 50cm. Peaty soil, part shade.

  • Leucothoe Red Lips

    'Red Lips' is a compact, bushy, evergreen shrub with narrowly ovate, glossy, dark green leaves, red when young and turning wine-red in autumn. Racemes of small, white, bell-shaped flowers bloom in late spring to early summer.

  • Leucothoe Twisted Red

    Switch Ivy. An upright evergreen shrub with glossy dark green leaves, heavily mottled pink and cream. Clusters of white flowers in early spring. Height 1.5m. Spread 2m. Flowers from May to June. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Leucothoe Walteri Rainbow

    Small to medium sized shrub of elegant habit, excellent ground cover for acidic soils, graceful arching stems carry leathery green variegated cream yellow pink leaves, white flowers in June.

  • Leucothoe White Water

    Compact, spreading, evergreen shrub with arching, dark red stems bearing oblong to lance-shaped, white-margined, dark green leaves, flushed red or maroon in winter and racemes of bell-shaped, white flowers in spring.

  • Leycesteria formosa Golden Lantern

    An easy growing plant with attractive, clean, bright yellow-green foliage with hints of red in the new growth. In mid-summer it is covered with long pendulous drooping clusters of dark purplish-red bracts and white flowers. Follow this with dark purple berries in autumn. Fantastic plant.

  • Leycesteria formosa Purple Rain

    Himalayan Honeysuckle. An upright shrub with blue-green young stems and pendent white flowers surrounded by purple-red bracts. followed by purple-red berries. Height 2m. Spread 2m. Flowers from July to September. Fruits from August Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Ligustrum japonicum 1/2 Std

    A compact evergreen tree with a dense head of rich green leaves. White flowers in large panicles in May, then black berries. Ideal for obscuring overlooking windows. Clip after flowering in May and again in September.

  • Ligustrum japonicum Excelsum Superbum

    A clipped evergreen shrub with glossy, bright green leaves margined yellow. White flowers, followed by blue-black berries. Flowers from August to September. Fruits from August Evergreen. An excellent topiary specimen. Suitable for pots if fed and watered regularly.

  • Loropetalum chinense Black Pearl

    An eye-catching compact evergreen shrub with rich dark green foliage tinted purple all year round. Deep rose, fringed, spider like flowers are produced in abundance in early spring. Height 1m.

  • Loropetalum chinense Ever-red

    Red leaf and bright pink flowers, semi-evergreen in climates with mild winters. The leaves, purple red, especially in young vegetation, tend to become dark green inside, especially in late summer or in the case of exposure in the shade.

  • Loropetalum chinense Fire Dance

    Rounded evergreen bush with oval purple leaves. Clusters of fragrant spider like pink flowers in late winter and early spring. Originated in Himalayas related to the witch hazel. Height 1m. Spread 1m.

  • Maackia amurensis

    White flowers in upright clusters. in early to mid summer; bark is bronze to copper and peels on older branches. Full sun; moist. well drained soil; pH adaptable. 20-30 ft mature.
