Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Viburnum tinus Ladybird

    A dense, evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green foliage bearing flattened clusters of pink buds in winter and spring opening to small white flowers followed by blue-black fruits.

  • Viburnum tinus Lisa Rose

    Viburnum Tinus Lisa Rose is an excellent winter flowering bushy evergreen which has mid green glossy leaves. Flat white flower heads are produced from November to May.

  • Viburnum tinus Rock 'n' Rolla

    Striking evergreen shrub known for its distinctive foliage and year-round interest. Boasting a fantastic display of young red foliage in spring, which matures to a glossy green. Clusters of bright pink buds are produced from December to April, each opening to display illuminating white, fragrant blooms which gather together into a large flowerhead.

  • Viburnum x bodnantense Charles Lamont

    An upright shrub with dark green leaves. bronze when young. Fragrant, tubular pure pink flowers, on bare stems from late autumn to spring. Height 3m. Spread 2m. Flowers from November to April. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Viburnum x bodnantense Dawn

  • Vinca minor Bowles

    Lesser Periwinkle. A mat-forming evergreen shrub with trailing stems of dark green leaves. Dark blue flowers produced from mid-spring to autumn. Height 10-20cm. Spread Indefinite. Flowers from April to September. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Vitex agnus-castus var. latifolia

    Chaste Tree. A spreading shrub with aromatic dark green leaves. Small fragrant lilac to dark blue flowers from early to mid-autumn. Height 2-8m. Spread 2-8m. Flowers from September to October. Deciduous. Frost hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Weigela florida All Summer Monet

    Foliage is a beautiful blend of green, cream and pink (the pink becomes less pronounced as the leaves mature), and from late spring to mid-autumn, pink bell-shaped flowers add to the display as they form along the length of the stems. This small deciduous shrub can tolerate some shade, but for the most colourful display it should be grown in a sunny spot.
